Hey Y’all! I’m so excited to be starting my very own blog and to be sharing it with all of you. It’s something I never imagined I would do, but the idea just kind of came to me one day and I ran with it. So without further ado, let me introduce myself…my name is Samantha, most people call me Sam and my dad affectionately calls me Samensa because he’s Asian and has trouble pronouncing the “th”. I answer to all three. I’m a Jersey girl, born and bred, but I currently reside in Atlanta – where the tea is sweet and the chicken comes fried, trap is a way of life, and 90% of the streets are named Peachtree (though I have yet to see a single peach tree since moving down here). I have spent my entire professional career working in accounting and it has been less than fulfilling, to say the least. No offense to any accountants out there, but I just don’t believe crunching numbers is my true calling in life. So having just turned 30 this month, I’m trying to figure out how to make my life a little more purposeful and interesting and that’s when this blog idea came to me.
Now you might be wondering about the title of this blog, “Diary of a Quiet Asian Girl”, and what this has to do with anything. Well, Quiet Asian Girl, that would be me, of course. Growing up, some of my middle school classmates thought I was mute. Seriously. I’ve always been shy but I’ve definitely made some major strides since those days. At the end of the day, I’m still very much an introvert, and even though I tried so hard to fight the “quiet Asian girl” stereotype during my high school and college years, I am finally embracing the fact that i am just that – a quiet Asian girl. But at the same time, I am so much more than that. I’m a devout Christian. I love to write and aspire to be a big-time sports writer one day. I can rap Diamond’s verse in Knuck If You Buck, then at a moment’s notice put on a fake country twang to belt out my own rendition of Redneck Woman. I own an excessive amount of shoes and MAC lipsticks – a MACaholic if you will. I can salsa, bachata, and sometimes twerk when my butt wants to cooperate. I’m a die-hard Falcons fan. (I know we blew a 25 point lead in the Super Bowl – I don’t wanna talk about it, it still hurts.) And of course, I’m a proud Taiwanese girl, one who has an unhealthy obsession with stinky tofu.
Now let me get back to the blog and my purpose for creating it. Growing up in the New Jersey suburbs in an all white town, I didn’t have very many Asian friends. Unfortunately, I still don’t have that many, which keeps me out of the loop big time in terms of things that affect the Asian community. This got me thinking, wouldn’t it be great if we had a big social network or online community for Asian people where everyone can just connect with each other and share stories and information? So that’s what I want to do. I want to create a place where we can all come together and talk about big issues that affect the world as well as our community, discuss some of the best and worst things about being Asian, and share inside jokes that only we would understand. That way, I can stay informed, we can all learn from each other, and maybe I can make some friends in the process.
Now, if you’ve made it this far, congratulations! You’ve reached the end of my first post and I appreciate you for reading it all. I know I was rambling a lot. But good things are coming on “Diary of a Quiet Asian Girl” so stay tuned!! And feel free to leave a comment or any feedback below.
